Bird Watching Adventures

Rancho El Carrizal and the associated SEMARNAT UMA Los del Carrizal represent over 2,100 hectares (~5,200 acres) of semi-desert wilderness in the El Zamorano mountain range.   Cactus give way to pine and oak forests at elevation across our ranch providing excellent cover for birds and other animals.  The safe solitude of our natural protected areas in the State of Querétaro stand out across Mexico and contribute to it’s status as a globally megadiverse country.

In fact, a recent preliminary wildlife survey conducted by the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ) found that over 80% of all vertebrates on the UMA Los del Carrizal were birds!  We have posted pictures of some of our favorite sightings on this page, however, you can read more about the animals that call the Rancho El Carrizal home here: (Listado vertebrados UMA los del Carrizal con fotos_junio 2023).

Come stroll along more than 32 kilometers of trails cleared for hiking and horseback-riding, as you gaze across mountain canyons and through forest cover in search of the SEMARANAT-protected American Bushtit, the elusive Wild Turkey, or your favorite raptor.

We are located less than 50 kilometers (~30 miles) from the Querétaro International Airport and only 75 kilometers (~45 miles) from the city of Querétaro, come explore our trails and wildlife at a slower pace.  We can accommodate groups, large or small for 1 day or multi-day birdwatching adventures with optional additional amenities including:

  • 1 day birdwatching w/guide = $ 1000 pesos
  • Catered meals/day/per person = $250 pesos
